Ahlfors Lecture series

October 27-28, 2016, Organizers: H-T Yau and S-T Yau

Harvard University, Science Center Hall A (Thu) and D (Fri)

Speaker and Program

Andrei Okounkov (Columbia University)
October 27, 2016:

Lecture I
4:15-5:15 PM
in SC Hall C
Enumerative geometry and geometric representation theory, Lecture I
Interactions between mathematical physics and enumerative geometry have been a very rich source of new ideas in both fields for the past quarter of a century. In these lectures, I plan to talk about some more recent developments that link enumerative geometry with quantum groups and other objects that are really central to both representation theory and how it is applied in mathematical physics. While the overarching picture is really beautiful, thanks to many deep insights of many people, in the first lecture we will begin its exploration from the simplest examples.
October 28, 2016:

Lecture II
4:15-5:15 PM
in SC Hall D
Enumerative geometry and geometric representation theory: Lecture II
In the second lecture, my plan is to explain various applications of these ideas, including applications to enumerative geometry of curves in smooth threefolds, to the computation of the monodromy of important difference and differential equations of mathematical physics, and to topics in geometric Langlands correspondence.
A reception follows the Thursday lecture at 5:30 pm in the Math Department common room.

Lars Ahlfors
This is a lecture series in honor of Lars Ahlfors (1907-1996) who was William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University from 1946 to 1977. Ahlfors won the fields medal in 1936 and the Wolf prize in 1981.
