Natalia Pacheco-Tallaj, Are knots a group?, March 12, 2019

Natalia Pacheco-Tallaj Title: Are knots a group? Tue, March 12, 6pm - 7pm, Science Center 507.

Abstract: In this talk we'll think about whether we can impose the structure of a group on the set of all knots, or at least some quotient of this set by a suitable equivalence relation. In exploring this question, we will survey briefly the theory of Seifert surfaces and the more advance theory of knot concordance and slice knots. Understanding of basic topology will be helpful, but a quick Google search of the following concepts should surface: group, surface, genus, boundary, embedding.
