Lucy Wang: Though the Ultrafilter: Dictators and God

Please join us for the semester's final Math Table this Wednesday April 29th at 6pm on zoom here: https://harvard.zoom.us/j/698796794

Abstract: Ultrafilters are often studied in set theory and topology. In this talk, we'll introduce their application to two proofs that offer a more philosophical narrative: Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and Gödel's ontological argument. We'll discuss how the ultrafilter construction makes a similar argument for the existence of a dictator in a voting system as it does for the existence of God. Then, we'll explore some controversial elements of these results, and whether they are as extreme as they may seem.
