Lucy Wang: Though the Ultrafilter: Dictators and GodPlease join us for the semester's final Math Table this Wednesday April 29th at 6pm on zoom here: https://harvard.zoom.us/j/698796794Abstract: Ultrafilters are often studied in set theory and topology. In this talk, we'll introduce their application to two proofs that offer a more philosophical narrative: Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and Gödel's ontological argument. We'll discuss how the ultrafilter construction makes a similar argument for the existence of a dictator in a voting system as it does for the existence of God. Then, we'll explore some controversial elements of these results, and whether they are as extreme as they may seem. Poster PDF. |
